PRINTMAKING – summer school

Hannah FirminOur popular five-day summer schools enable students to develop their own projects and interests, with the support of a professional tutor in the Arts Alive Wales studio.

 

 

This summer school  with printmaker Hannah Firmin is an opportunity to experiment with variety of relief printing techniques using Lino, wood and vinyl blocks. Working  from your own designs you’ll create a basic single colour print or apply several colours. Hannah will show examples of her own work and guide you through the design process, demonstrating how an idea for an image can be developed as a print for different uses, such as card design, illustration, repeat image for fabric printing and letter heading.

The workshop is ideal for complete beginners as well as those with some experience.

Sat 5th – Weds 9th Aug, 10am-3pm
£175 for 5 days

Concentrating on the making process this practical summer school introduces the fundamental techniques used in hand-built ceramics. Martin Craddock, our trained potter and tutor will guide you through coiling, slabbing and press-moulded dish making. Suitable for beginners as well as those with some experience.

A summer school concerned with the importance of observation of the human figure. You’ll work directly from the life model with artist and tutor Tony Tribe, providing individual guidance. The course will equip you with the technical and perceptual skills to competently render the human figure. Each session will feature a long pose of two or three hours’ length, although shorter poses are always incorporated into the day. Students will be introduced to key areas of life drawing – measuring, proportion, anatomy, line, tone and mass.

Suitable for all abilities, please bring a board and materials.
Please bring a packed lunch.
Sat 15th – Weds 19th July, 10am-3pm
£25 per day / £100 for 5 days

BASKET MAKING – summer term

Basket MakingArtisan Basket Maker and Willow Craftswoman, Mary Zammit, will introduce you to the skills and techniques of this ancient craft. Using locally grown willow you’ll learn how to design and construct your own basket from scratch. You’ll need a sharp pocket knife, secateurs and a medium flat-headed screw driver. Suitable for beginners as well as those with some experience.

You’ll be introduced to a variety of art materials, practical techniques and processes alongside relevant art history examples. Over eight weeks students will develop their visual art skills and confidence as part of a supportive group in our light and airy studio.

BOTANICAL ILLUSTRATION

Botanical Illustration with Debbie Devauden

In this day-long workshop you’ll create a beautiful illustration of a Spring specimen. Tutor Debbie Devauden will guide you through the various techniques to achieve a detailed and accurate botanical painting. You’ll have the opportuntity to work in pen with a wash of colour or learn the methods to create a pure watercolour picture.

Debbie is an experienced tutor who welcomes students of all abilities.  She gained a Diploma in Botanical Illustration from The English Garden School at the Chelsea Physic Garden and has exhibited widely, including with the Society of Botanical Artists at their London exhibitions.

TEXTILES – spring term

Textiles with Bettina Reeves

Designer Bettina Reeves introduces a new four week course focused on the use of design and colour in textiles. With support and guidance from Bettina, students will build their experience of a range of techniques including patchwork, quilting, applique, embroidery and dyeing. There will be emphasis on playing with colour and texture. Students will improve their practical skills and have the opportunity to work on their own creative projects during the course.


Bettina will encourage you to take inspiration from the natural world and produce something practical and decorative or to use the time for experimentation and improvisation.

Please bring any images that inspire you – particularly of colours/contrasts/themes. You will also need a basic sewing kit. Some materials will be provided but if you have any fabrics that you especially want to to use please bring them along.

Tuesdays, 10am-2pm

Bettina Reeves is currently a Senior Lecturer in Theatre Design at The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and has extensive experience as a designer with theatre companies in Wales and London. She specialises in costume, puppetry, textiles and prop-making. Bettina has collaborated with Arts Alive Wales for several years, notably on the Abergavenny Food Festival market hall installations. Bettina also draws and paints.

Poet and letterpress printer Francesca Kay provides a hands-on introduction to letterpress printing. With a flatbed proofing press and lots of wonderful old wooden letters, Francesca shows how to set type and print in a process essentially unchanged since William Caxton’s time.

Drawing & Painting with Philip Watkins and Tessa Waite 

Join artists Philip Watkins and Tessa Waite for our  regular Wednesday morning art classes. Our professional tutors will introduce a variety of art materials, practical techniques and processes alongside relevant art history examples. Over eight weeks students will develop their visual art skills and confidence in this relaxed and supportive group.

Spring Term:

All artists have a creative store of ideas or sketchbooks which form the source of their work. During the Spring term our tutors will support you to take your ideas and drawings further or to experiment with them in different media.

All classes are suitable for beginners as well as those with some experience.

Please bring your ideas/sketchbook with you.
