Arts Workshops for International Women’s Day

International Women's Day LogoArts Alive Wales have been working closely with Penny Hallas, head of arts therapies, Aneurin Bevan Health Board, to provide creative activities for adults with learning disabilties in 2012 and have been awarded funding from the Welsh Government to run art workshops for women with learning disabilties to mark International Women’s Day.

We’re holding free arts events on 21st February and 6th March 2012 in our studio in Crickhowell to celebrate International Women’s Day.  Artist Morag Colquhoun will be running the workshops.  Let us know if you would like to come along, and put the dates in your diary.

Who can come?
The art workshops are for women with learning disabilities. There will be 4 workshops, and space for about 8 women to come to each one. The workshops are for people of all abilities, and you can bring a carer if you would like.

Why are they happening?
They are part of celebrations for International Women’s Day, which happens every year on the 8th March. This year, International Women’s day is all about working together to stop violence towards women.

What will we do?
At the workshops we will use art to:

  • Celebrate being women together
  • Let people know what is important to you as a woman
  • Think about ‘A safe place’
  • Have our say about what it means to feel safe and respected

When will they be?
Tuesday 21st February
                   Workshop from 10am-1pm
                   Workshop from 2pm-4pm

Tuesday 6th March
                   Workshop from 10am – 1pm
                   Workshop from 2pm – 4pm

Each workshop has 8 places, but you can bring a carer if you would like to.

Where will they be?
In the studio at Arts Alive
Brecon Road
Crickhowell
Powys, NP8 1DG
This might be a long drive for some people, but there will be a small help towards travelling.

Exhibition of what we make together
We’re planning to have an exhibition of the artwork we make at the workshops at Nevill Hall, Abergavenny on 8th March 2012, International Women’s Day. This would be an event that you, your family and friends could attend, as well as being open to the general public.

Who is running the workshops?
Arts Alive and the Arts Therapies Service have been planning them together and have asked Morag Colquhoun to plan and run the activities. We have also talked to People First groups.  They are linked to People First and Gwent Police’s work on stopping Disability Hate Crime.
