Introduction to Pottery

Concentrating on the making processes this practical ten-week course introduces the fundamental techniques used in hand-built ceramics. Martin Craddock, our trained potter and tutor will guide you through Coiling, Slabbing and Press-Moulded dish making.

Suitable for beginners as well as those with some previous experience.

Includes all firing and materials.

Sunday Craft Club – monthly

Sunday afternoons are boring no longer! Artist, Penny Turnbull, introduces recycled fabrics, felt and fun into the Arts Alive studio for our monthly craft club.

SUNDAY 2-5pm

Basket Making

Mary Zammit is a professional basket-maker who will guide you through the techniques of this ancient craft. You’ll work with willow to create your own basket and explore the colour, texture and form of this versatile material. Suitable for beginners as well as those with some previous experience.

You’ll need a sharp pocket knife, secateurs and a medium flat-headed screw driver.

MONDAY 16th, 23rd, 30th January & 6th February.

Celebrate Spring! Half-Term Workshops

What can you see outside? Animals, rivers, hills and trees are full of life after the winter. Have fun with recycled materials as you make your own Springtime scene!

Artist, Kathy Young, will inspire children to work together to create a collective artwork for display at a fundraising exhibition for Arts Alive Wales in March at Porthmawr Country House.

Interpreting the Landscape

As part of the Crickhowell Walking Festival

Join artist Valerie Coffin Price for an inspirational walk along the lanes, meadows and waterways of Crickhowell and Llangattock. Responding to the diverse landscape you’ll create new drawings, photography or writing, depending on your personal interests. You’ll return to the Arts Alive studio in the afternoon to develop your ideas.

Distance: Approximately 3 miles. A gentle walk with a couple of steeper climbs and fields. Please wear suitable outdoor clothes and walking boots. Please bring your own art materials/equipment and a packed lunch.

Digital Photography

Don’t know your focal length from your F-stop? Professional photographer Toril Brancher will guide you through the technical details of the digital camera as well as help you to improve your creative approach to photography. You’ll build on your knowledge, skills and confidence each week to develop a portfolio of images.

Art Outdoors – for parents & toddlers

Artist, Kate Raggett hosts a special workshop for parents and pre-school children. You’ll explore the local landscape and discover natural materials to create a larger-than-life outdoor drawing.  Use the environment as your inspiration to play, learn and create together.

Please wear suitable outdoor clothes and footwear.

Looney Tunes Animation Workshop

A unique jazz and cartoon film workshop for children aged 8+.  Create an animated cartoon film in the afternoon which will be shown to a live Looney Tunes soundtrack at an evening concert by the Stu Brown Sextet.
