Inside OUT Whitestone

A Conversation in the WoodsIn winter 2010/11, Arts Alive Wales worked in partnership with Wye Valley AONB to deliver a pilot project at Whitestone Forestry Commission site near Llandogo, Monmouthshire as part of the ‘Inside Out’ programme.

Whitestone was the second stage of a Wye Valley AONB project which began at Bracelands, Forest of Dean in 2009. The objective is to use the arts as a catalyst to engage and connect people from excluded and under represented groups in Monmouthshire to connect with the landscape of the Wye Valley and offer disadvantaged groups opportunities for enjoyment, self-expression and relaxation in the outdoor environment.

Arts Alive Wales ran a similar project in partnership with the National Trust at the Skirrid in Abergavenny, Monmouthshire during 2007-10 and is now undertaking a follow-on programme at this site in 2012/13.

PARTICIPANTS

Inside OUT Whitestone was targeted at under-represented and hard to reach groups. We worked with:

• Alzheimers Monmouthshire alongside musician Gill Stevens

• MIND Abergavenny with writer Michael Church

• WAIMON (Women’s Aid Monmouthshire) doing forest arts with Anna Ozemoya

• Young Carers working with Lynette Margerison

At the closing celebration, Land Artist, Kate Raggett, created ‘footprints’ from natural found materials at the site.

PROJECT AIMS AND OUTCOMES

• To establish landscape areas within the Wye Valley AONB suitable for use by a range of under-represented groups

• To develop innovative community arts projects to connect people with the landscape environment

• To allow exploration of health issues specific to user groups through a creative experience

• To provide inspirational creative learning and experiences

• To identify and employ local creative practitioners who will use their skills in creative workshops

• To strengthen the connections between under-represented groups and the landscape of the Wye Valley

• To explore health issues through outdoor creativity
