North West Brecon is blessed with access to wonderful countryside, including the Crug hill fort and is the site of an ancient well with a well preserved well house sheltering the spring. The Well lies on the northern border of a large housing estate and in 2009, some of its residents formed the Maendu Well Conservation Group to tackle neglect and vandalism at this wonderful historic site and to enable it to become a place for enjoyment and recreation for the local community.
Green Fire II Brecon is an arts project run by Arts Alive Wales that is supporting the vision of Maendu Well Conservation Group by working with the children, young people and adults who live in that area. It aims to use the arts to encourage community participation, environmental awareness and help safeguard the well and its unique habitat. The project includes open access community events and environmental art activities based at Maendu Well and an art project for young people, in particular teenagers, to create an artwork that celebrates and explores the special environment of the Well.
