SHELTERED – CABAN CREFFT 2015-16

Sculptor Matt Caines has been leading stone carving sessions in his workshop in Abergavenny for young people supported by homeless organisations Solas-Cymru (Abergavenny) and Gwalia (Brecon).

Outdoor dry stone walling sessions for young people supported by Solas-Cymru were led by professional waller Nigel Spiers in a project partnership with Walls of Llangynidr. The sessions took place on a farm on the Blorenge, near Abergavenny.

‘I feel I am gaining confidence from carving. I enjoy the control and seeing something emerge that I have created.

I’m creating my son’s name in stone. I have learned patience and feel calm when I’m working.

I would like to think about getting back into work, an apprenticeship would be good. I like the physical side of the stone carving.

Caban has made a difference to me. I’m learning a skill and have got more confidence in myself.’
