The Path by Maen Du Well

Upon the hill by Maen Du well

There is a path which I can tell,

Leads on up to the Celtic fort

Where one can be alone with thought,

Where from the ring of ramparts green

The whole of Brecon can be seen,

St. John’s cathedral down below,

Passing by the Usk’s waters flow,

These sleeping slopes remember when

This hill was climbed by ancient men,

And dug with earth and sweat and stone

Before men came from mighty Rome,

Before the town itself was there

St Mary’s church and Bethel Square,

Before the castle’s towers stood

And Norman lords arrived in flood.
