Winner of the Creative Network mini fund

Stone carver Matt Caines, and jeweller and textile artist Amanda Caines have been awarded £300 through the September Creative Network mini-fund.

Based in Abergavenny, Matt and Amanda’s work has become more and more collaborative, finding ways of starting to combine firstly carved stone and wood, and later, naturally shed pieces of deer antler with Amanda’s stitch work and painterly approach to 3D structures. They have not only made freestanding animal forms from engraved antler sections with textile stitch work panels, but also made wall hanging pieces with attachments.

Currently they are making a collection for this year’s Made London Craft Show, which is sponsored by Crafts Magazine and Winter Draws Nigh, and later an exhibition to be held at The Brook Street Gallery in Hay-on-Wye in October.

Matt and Amanda will be using the mini-fund award to upgrade their equipment and purchase better engraving drill bits and other jewellers tools which will allow them, in turn to upgrade the nature of their work. As self-employed artists, this small investment will help Matt and Amanda realise sketchbook ideas, not only in exhibitions and shows, but also in their work as teachers.
