Portfolio Plus + Blog – 2017

“Overall, the two days gave me a lot to think about and a great deal of inspiration for my own work… It is certainly safe to say I have gained a new perspective on the world!”

From 24th-28th July 2017, Arts Alive Wales ran their Portfolio Plus+ project (15-19 years) for young people who show a special talent and interest in the arts. The project boosts students artistic skills and knowledge and encourages creative careers. Commissioned by the Arts Council Wales and Powys County Council and part of the National Criw Celf initiative, Portfolio introduces students to professional artists, makers and designers through inspirational workshops, studio and gallery visits, exploring different approaches to art and design.  Arts Alive Wales runs two groups (11-15yrs + 15-19yrs) each year – see our Project page for more information.

On two of the workshops, Arts Alive Wales invited two of its promising writers who have been working on AAW Creative writing project, Caban Sgriblio at Gwernyfed High School to join the group as writers in residence. Roxy Shaw and Amelie Williams attended a trip to IKON gallery, Birmingham, to observe Sidney Nolan’s spray paintings and later for a visit to The Sidney Nolan Trust responding to Nolan’s work and working in the landscape with drone technology.

“Learning about the drone was fascinating, and it gave a completely unique perspective of the landscape…I think this insight into new technology gives artists new ways to present the world around them and I am very pleased to have had a part in that.”
